i’m told that xiang chi (chinese chess) is somewhere between 3000 to 4000 years old. across the street in the park, young and old throwdown all day and all night at xiang chi. the people watch with great seriousness, the silence is deafening with hardly anyone moving except for the hands of the players. tonight, there was a dragon festival in the middle of the park. very loud music, performances and children running around. but next to it all were the xiang chi games. with all this noise around these guys were in a bubble in their own silent world lit only by the bug lights above (hence, the yellow tone). i had to be very stealthy in my shooting style.

They look so intense! Is there money involve on this game?
i don’t think so. these guys are just about the skills and respect. although maybe there’s some side action going on.
is this a natural lighting or do you have to place a special filter to get the sepia effect?
no filters.
this is available light. the street lighting in chinatown has an amber tone to it. if you’re directly under a lamppost, like these guys are everything looks one color.
