dream a little dream
1. What’s the last vivid dream that you remember having?
i was married to Patricia Arquette and for some reason i was not happy with our relationship for some time. she was always nagging* me abut god knows what. Eddie Murphy came over to visit and wanted to go out and hang out and the wife wouldn’t let me. i left the house and went to a bar, met an incredible woman who was interesting and had many things in common. we started to have an affair and eventually, i had to break it off with patricia.
(* i’m sure in real life Patricia Arquette is quite nice and there are worse people to be married to.)
2. Do you have any recurring dreams?
not really, none that i can remember anyway. i have recurring nightmares actually.
3. What’s the scariest nightmare you’ve ever had?
lately, the scariest nightmare that i’ve had for the last 6 months or so is one where i’ve been travelling a bunch and finally heading home. i’m in a plane and suddenly something goes wrong and it’s going to crash. we have about 2 minutes to live and the only thing i’m trying to do is call and reach the people i love to tell them that i love them. i don’t get though. i’ve had this nightmare at least 10 times and it ends the same way all the time.
4. Have you ever written your dreams down or considered it? Why or why not?
i have sleep disorders, serious insomnia now and when i was younger, serious sleep walking. a therapist suggested i record my dreams so that i can talk about them. i’ve been recording my dreams for about 15 years, first i used a little journal near my nightstand, when i woke up i would write it down. but my penmanship is horrible to begin with and when i’m sleepy, it’s worse. so i switched to a micro-recorder. i would just get up and talk into the recorder and go back to bed. then i got another recorder that had ‘voice-activated’ recording. i would leave it on all night and because i talk in my sleep, i am able to record myself while i’m dreaming, if i woke up i would describe the dream as well. i probably have a shoe box of microcassettes. when i started to do more extended travel, i didn’t want to lug around a bunch of micro-cassettes. so i now i use dictation software on my laptop (which has a built-in mic) for my dream entries. it’s helped me understand things about myself, my life and my relationship with others.
5. Have you ever had a lucid dream? What did you do in it? usually, when i have a lucid dream, it’s very funny. that is to say, that something incredibly funny happens, i realize it’s a dream, i start to laugh and i actually laugh in reality. i’ve waken people up with my laughing in bed. it’s weird. the other type of lucid dream usually involves something with work and it’s some kind of problem solving puzzle. i always try and remember those because more than half the time an actual solution presents itself in the dream and if i’m lucky enough to recall it, it’s quite inventive.
