visual effects

images and textures a plenty

todd of dominey design posts a cool link on kaliber 10000.
imageafter provides a nice database of textures and images for you to download. i’m not sure if they’re usable for hi-res (film/print) work but they’re good for reference and vid-res work.
p.s. i didn’t know that ‘filipino-powered’ halfproject is back up with a redesign.

the story on how an fx house died

wow, it’s been a while since an an interesting post popped up at AICN. i really am sypathetic to this article for i too am a victim of the vfx industry, twisting in the wind.
i’m a big fan of dreamquest images’ work since “the abyss”, to be specific i’m a big fan of Hoyt Yeatman. [...]

previsioners

a small interview at filmcritic.com “Imaginary Forces: Minority Report Previsions Creators Kurt Mattila and Matt Checkowski”.

apple plays tough

everyone saw this coming, now it’s official. the forthcoming ’shake 2.5′ will be the last for windows. apple should buy alias/wavefront, do the same thing and get it over with.

another offspring

ILM spawns tweak films.

alias | wavefront slashes prices

alias | wavefront reduce prices. Maya complete for $1,999, Unlimited for $6,999. if you just bought Maya Unlimited for $16,000. congrats, you just got shafted.

it’s not the size, it’s what you deliver

a nice article ‘Animated rivalry. Special-effects shops creating success stories’ gives bay area cgi shops some ink. Though i don’t think Tippet Studios is really a ’small’ house.

attention vfx/cgi artists

i’m currently updating my database of cg artists, texture painters and compositors. i’m starting to get more calls from people looking for artists and if i have your current info, it’ll help me find the best person for the job.
please email a resume/credit list to me (pdf is preferable but ms word is ok) don’t [...]

apple shakes

apple acquires nothing real, makers of ’shake’ compositing software (the best, in my opinion).
i never saw that coming. i wonder what apple plans on using the technology for?

cheap paint for mac

GIMP for mac is out for OSX. it’s a freely distributed paint program (similar to photoshop). there’s a packaging/shipping cost (29 bucks) the mac version is lacking some features but it’s super scriptable and can batch convert, process and render images.
because it’s free/cheap, this is a popular tool we use at the houses i’ve [...]
